What Can I Expect? / Frequently Asked Questions

It can be intimidating to visit a new church. What will they be wearing? How do they worship? Will I be welcome? At Patuxent Baptist Church, we understand the questions and feelings that surround your first visit to a new place. We make every effort to make you feel welcome and right at home from the moment you first arrive and every time you return. Our message comes simply from the Word of God, as we apply His unchanging truth in verse by verse study of the King James Bible. Drop in sometime and see!

If you have not been to a church before, or it has been a long time, you may be asking yourself what you will encounter if you decide to join us at one of our services. We’ve designed this page in an attempt to answer some of the more common questions about what you can expect. We want you to experience inspiring music, helpful teaching and preaching, friendly people, and a place where you feel welcome and "at home!" Here are a few answers to your questions and what you might expect on your first visit.

What is the morning schedule?

What is the morning schedule?
Today’s society is fast-paced. People are working longer and longer hours. It’s increasingly becoming more and more difficult for many people to participate in meetings of the church on a Sunday morning. God’s Word tells us to honor the Sabbath Day and to keep it holy. We believe it is important to start out our week by setting that day aside from the distractions of daily life, and focusing on the things we can learn from the Bible. We are also told in the Bible that Christians should not to forsake the fellowship of believers. The best place for that fellowship to occur is church. With that in mind, the folks who make up Patuxent Baptist Church meet together at various times throughout each week as well as on Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. Sunday school starts at 10:00 a.m. Following Sunday School, we have our morning worship service, which begins at 11:00 a.m.

Are there services at other times?

Are there services at other times?
Yes. We have a Sunday evening service (completely different from Sunday morning) that begins at 6:00 p.m. Again, in this service you'll enjoy a challenging and helpful message from the pastor. We also meet on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. for a mid-week Bible study. If you can't be our guest on Sunday morning, we hope you'll visit with us during another service time.

How should I dress?

How should I dress?
We don't have a "dress code", but the rule of thumb at Patuxent Baptist Church is simply to come in modest attire. Our ministry leaders and many of our church family dress in more traditional “Sunday” dress; however, our main goal is that you would feel welcome and comfortable on your visit here at Patuxent Baptist Church!

Are there activities for my children?

Are there activities for my children?
Starting with excellent nurseries, there is something special for every age child. We offer a fun, exciting program for children, and we’re confident that your kids would have a great time if they were to participate. At the same time, we certainly understand why you would want to check us out before allowing your kids to go to a separate part of the facility to participate in our children’s program. At every service there are safe, clean, and fully staffed nurseries for children up to two years of age. For the nursery, parents will receive a numbered tag so that the nursery workers can easily contact you if there is a need. For a nursery brochure, please click here. For children two years old and up there are fun, friendly, and Bible-centered classes. These classes are staffed with trained, friendly, and well-qualified teachers and helpers who will make church exciting and memorable for your child.

Am I expected to participate in the offering?

Am I expected to participate in the offering?
In a word, No. We don't invite you to Patuxent Baptist Church for your offering. We want our service to be a gift to you. We hope you will find in this place a warm family spirit, truth from God's Word, and a place where you can grow in God's grace. Please don't feel any obligation to participate in the offering as a guest.

Do I have to stand in front of people?

Do I Have To Stand Up In Front Of People?
We do ask if there are any visitors with us, but do not feel that you have to stand up and introduce yourself in front of everyone. We know that some of you will be more comfortable meeting a few people who are seated around you and who are genuinely interested in getting to know you better rather than introducing yourself to a large group of people but not really meeting anyone. One of our main goals for every Sunday service is for people to be able to connect with God and with each other. We invite you to fill out the Visitor Card one of our door greeters or ushers will provide, which is our way of knowing who you are, what kind of needs you might have, and how we can serve you better. Near the beginning of most of our services, there are a few moments for people to meet and chat with one another. In that way, genuine friendships can begin in brief conversations. Sometimes we even take the chance to greet each other during one of the songs.

Are You Going To Tell Me What’s Wrong With Me?

Are You Going To Tell Me What’s Wrong With Me?
At its core, the message of Jesus is about good news. He did not come to earth to condemn us. Instead, He came to give us life. And so, while we feel it is important to recognize that we all have fallen short of God’s standard of perfection, it is at this point we can start learning how we can have an abundantly full and complete life and relationship with Jesus. Our desire is that you would come away from our services contemplating that reality: that while we have fallen short of the ideal in our lives and God’s standards, through Jesus we can have satisfaction, fulfillment and joy in a way and in a measure we have never known before, and to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ in your life today. You can also call the church and we would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

I have more questions!

I have more questions!
Knowing that no list can answer all of your questions, if there's something we missed here, just give us a call, or ask someone when you arrive. Whether this is your first time going to a church, or if you're coming from another church, or you're new to the area and looking for a church home, or if it's been a long time since you've attended church at all, we hope your first visit at Patuxent Baptist Church will be great! We exist to serve you and your family, and we are looking forward to meeting you personally. We hope you'll feel right at home from the very first moment you step through our doors! Let us know how we can serve you better, and we hope to meet you this Sunday!
